Did Spock really need the bandage on his head?

Pretend you're one of the citizens of 1980's San Francisco never having heard of Vulcans. So he has pointy ears! OK it's freaky but lot's of people have weird congenital oddities. It's not like he was Ferrengi or even Klingon.

Hey! You're not old enough to drink! Now go and die for your country!!!

I would think that the headband was much less conspicuous than the ears and eyebrows. But yeah it is Frisco.

It's either the headband, or an explanation about a mechanical rice picker...

If Spock hadn't covered his ears than we would have needed an extra scene where somebody noticed Spock and they gave them some BS excuse (like birth defect) otherwise people would have nitpicked why nobody was even questioned Spock's strange appearance. Yes it wouldn't be hard to explain away but they probably didn't want to have to explain much. Better safe than sorry. It was probably better to try and blend in and not attract too much attention. Or at least that was the plan, Spock sort of threw all that out the window when he jumped in the whale tank and made a lot of strange comments.

"Dan Marino should die of gonorrhea and rot in hell. Would you like a cookie son?"

It was also likely a cost-saving measure. Also, Leonard Nimoy wouldn't have to sit through a couple hours of makeup, allowing him to concentrate more on his directing.

Just think. If they'd landed in 2016 [Big City], people would think he's just one of those weird cosplayers who really likes elf ears.
