Why didn't they create a parallel timeline like in the reboot?

When the Enterprise crew went back in time why didn't they cause there to be a new timeline created much the same way when Nero went back in time with old Spock in the reboot a new timeline was created?

And when the Enterprise crew "returned" to their 23rd century (if such a thing would even be possible) would they find a whole new bunch of people living "their" lives as Kirk, Spock, Bones, etc. but having different faces? How bizarre that would be?

Because it is not the reboot, which came a couple of decades later.

I am not a fan. I just happen to enjoy movies. Fans are embarrassing.

I guess cos they didn't create a new timeline because they didn't change the past (to any significance). They didn't go back and stop the probe ever arriving. They went back, took two whales, and brought them to the future.

If they'd instead gone back, stopped the whales from ever becoming extinct then yeah they'd be going back to a different timeline (where in the 24th century there were already whales in communication with the probe and it never went to earth looking for them).

Or it could be that they are part of a fixed timeline.

The Enterprise was always supposed to go back in time, McCoy and Scotty were to give the formula to Nichols and he really did 'invent' transparent aluminium, and they were always supposed to find 2 whales and bring Gillian along.

Where are the time travel experts ? 

I'm just on my way up to Clavius.
