What are the merging tracks within the railway tracks?

When they first get on the railway track, there is a shot of narrower tracks within the tracks that suddenly merge. The inside tracks are also there at the bridge but without merging so they look like they're for a different gauge or something. Can anyone tell me what the inner tracks are about and why they merge in that first encounter?

In railroad use, guard rails are placed parallel to regular running rail along areas of restrictive clearance, such as a bridge, trestle, or tunnel. These have the effect of keeping the wheels of rolling stock in alignment in case of derailment.
