Blackface IS a big fuckin deal.

Whether bird dumb John Wayne yanks like it or not.

reply

The only people caught doing blackface in the last few decades were democrats/liberals. None of them got in trouble for it.

reply

Jimmy Kimmel! (Boooo him)

reply

And Justin Trudeau and a governor (I forget his name) and Ted Danson and where there's smoke, there's fire, so probably a lot more we haven't heard about.

reply

governor (I forget his name)

Ralph Northam. Apparently he and his wife liked to play Klan before bed and she called him her Grand Dragon.

reply

Why is it a big deal?

reply

Thats bs. Anyone around the world is doing it. Indian people acting like they are caucasians and chinese people too. So get a life a get used to the fact!

reply

Some people are REALLY keen on defending blackface. That in itself is very questionable.

reply

Probably because it doesn't really matter.

The Wayans did white face in White Chicks in 2004. Did you see a lot of outrage from white people over that? The only thing worth being outraged over is the double-standard.

reply

If it doesn't matter then why defend it so much? I didn't like that movie anyways. You do have a point in that whiteface was actually historically used to mock Irish people. I don't know why people weren't offended by white chicks. Maybe some people were, but I'm personally not. I guess it's because In American media black people have been mocked much more often, and perhaps the most in the past, not white people. There's also a huge difference in offensive content given context. This movie vs the old footage of Judy Garland are entirely different. Her scenario, poor thing, was meant to be mocking

reply

I think we have to differentiate between actual blackface, like they did in minstrel shows back in the day--which I agree is offensive and I can't blame someone for being offended by it--and simply using make-up to darken (or lighten, as the case may be) someone's appearance in order to look more like a character they're portraying.

I think that the intention is what matters. RDJ got away with it in Tropic Thunder for the very reason that people knew he wasn't intending to denigrate black folks, but I doubt Hollywood would even attempt that today.

reply

Honestly, I did see a lot of outrage over White Chicks. What saved the Wayan Bros. was that the movie was so amazingly unfunny that hardly anyone saw it.

Al Jolson performed in blackface, and he was the one who made the biggest push to get blacks into Hollywood films. It isn't the darkening of a person's skin that should be a problem. It's the depiction of the race that should be the problem. Unfortunately, modern "enlightened" progressive liberals are offended by everything.

Just to let you know, Jackie Wilson dedicated an entire album to Al Jolson. Now, do your best to explain to me how Al Jolson was a racist.
