Was originally a subplot to Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome

There has been some speculation that "Solarbabies" was actual comprised of deleted scenes from "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome." When the subplot of the solarbabies did not test well with audiences, director George Miller removed the entire story arc of Mel Gibson's Max as an EcoWarrior. Not wanting to lose too much money on the wasted scenes, Warner Brothers auction off the filmed subplot of the solarbabies to MGM which, with a few additional scenes shot by Alan Johnson became the 1984 movie.

"a few additional scenes"? so was Jason Patric and Jamie Gertz originally supposed to be in Mad Max/Thunderdome? Seems like a lot of additional scenes would've had to have been filmed..

Ya, no kidding.... MMBT was already hella long.... why in gods name would a writer consider making it like TWICE as long?

reply

I wouldn't be surprised if it were, it has that Mad Max look and feel to it.

"Don't hate. PLEASE don't hate."

So do a lot of movies that tried to capitalize on the success of MMBT.

Mad Max Suxs I have tried to get what people like about it four times, watched all three, but it does not make any sense, the movies, other than the title character, and a sort of feel like, these events happen after some "great Event", do not go together at all. Please someone explain to me the love people have for this movie.

There has been much speculation, FILMCZY, that your story is totally false! Since there never were any scenes of Max as an EcoWarrior and since no scene in Solarbabies even looks like it was shot like Thunderdome -- I'd say you made it up! I've never heard of a studio "auctioning off" scenes that were not good enough for a movie -- let alone giving it to another studio!

M8 you are proof that some people just shouldn't be allowed to breed, namely your parents

reply

i second this.

as an Australian i can say without a doubt FILMCZY's claims
are completely incorrect, the cast of MMBT are quite blatantly
Australian and many of them are quite well known in both film and
television here, the landscape from all 3 MM films is also quite
obviously Australia (just like the girl in a red dress scene from the matrix- Anyone from aus can pick out the Commonwealth Bank logo a mile away)
while Solarbabies is quite obviously not filmed here.

That is some really fascinating film trivia. While watching this film I kept thinking how much the second half of the movie was like "Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome" in style and theme. I think it was brilliant to develop a discarded subplot and create a whole separate movie from it. Contrary to many on this message board, I enjoyed this movie!

while i enjoyed this movie as a child in the 80's, i can definitely say there is no way this was footage from MMBT.

it was filmed in spain, in it's entirety.

now, early drafts of the MMBT script might have had a similar subplot, i could buy that story. but if so, they never made it to filming. and certainly not to get those filmed portions auctioned off, and some additional re-shoots to make a complete movie.

sorry man, if someone told you that, you should kick them in the nuts for lying to you.

reply

Yeah, I think your version is probably the truth, but I love the idea of it. It's a nice Hollywood fantasy, creating something ( an eighties classic) from a discarded script that was dumped in the waste basket.
