Ok I'm not sure if this is the right movie or not but I remember seeing a movie when I was real young, I don;t remember much but one part I do remember is someone in a clown mask hiding behind the front seat of the car and they show his face in the rearview mirror?? Is this scene from this movie or something close to it???

Yep, definetly same movie. That would be the part where Carl tries to escape in Carol's car and gets stabbed through the drivers seat from behind, by Marty who is lurking in the backseat.
