Sex Pistols and the Media
Hi, everyone. I watched this movie about a month ago, and I wasn't that fond of it, but I took it with a grain of salt judging by critics' reviews. Anyway, ever since this summer, I've been really interested in the Sex Pistols, Sid and Nancy, and punk rock in general. It all started when I was just bored on Youtube. I typed in "Sid Vicious," and I watched "The Last 24 Hours." After that, I was hooked. I watched "Who Killed Nancy." I read John Lydon's book "Anger is an Energy" and started to really enjoy his interviews, his music after the Sex Pistols, but I also was watching a lot of docs on the guys, too, and in general the British punk rock scene. To date, I've read "And I Don't Want to Live this Life," "12 Days on the Road," "No Irish, No Blacks, No Dogs," "Sid Vicious: Rock and Roll Star," "Sid Vicious: Too Young to Die," and I'm currently reading "England's Dreaming." It's so good, I stayed up until 4 in the morning to finish a section of it.
My question is, is anyone here old enough to remember what the backlash was like for the Sex Pistols, or did anyone really care about them outside of England? I've watched so many docs with the Bill Grundy interview and how Winterland was a mess, but was all the hate and fear mongering real about how crazy they were, or was it all media hype? Also, when you were in school, did other students or teachers comment on how evil they and punk rock were?
