Sequel?
Before the unfortunate passing of Gregory Hines, were there ever any plans of a sequel to this movie? Anyone aware of a potential script that was written after its release?

shareI never heard of plans for a sequel but it surprised and dissapointed me that one was never made. Despite the fact that Hines and Crystal had never met before the filming (according to the featurette on the DVD) their chemistry was undeniably great. Why Hollywood made sequels to so many slasher and other clearly B or C grade movies and not this one is beyond me. Maybe there was a script and an attempt but the schedules of Hines and Crystal prevented it? Who knows. All I know is that it was a missed opportunity for another fun movie, as this one with one great line or scene right after another was in my opinion one of the best comedy/action cop movies of the 80's, very close but not quite a Beverly Hills Cop, but better than BHC 2 and 3, and certainly it deserved a sequel. I think it was right up there with 48 Hours. I don't know how much of the film was ad-libbed but knowing Crystal there certainly must have been a goodly amount of improvisation, and the results were certainly classic!
Danny Costanzo: "Oh, hablo Smith and Wesson? You have the right to remain DEAD. Anything you do will be used against you. You have the right to a coroner. If you cannot afford one, we will appoint a medical examiner for you!"
I have always loved this movie, but I've never really wanted a sequel. Hollywood has ruined too many great movies with less than mediocre sequels, and I hope the reason that didn't happen here is that Hines & Crystal (two guys I very much respect) were too classy to try to cash in and cheapen their work.
shareThere was going to be a sequel! but the first film only grossed 38 million at the box office...So because of that they didnt make it.
The title for the sequel was called "STILL RUNNING"
You know, it's funny. I always thought that if there WAS going to be a sequel, "Still Running" would be the most appropriate title.

I like your take on this. If MGM decided to do a sequel in this direction, there would definitely be more emphasis on the comedy than the action. Although, I was hoping for some action to occur with the "Anna gets fired for arson" subplot. Great story overall.

Correction, there was going to be a sequel. There were many scripts placed on the table to do one. However the script's storylines and dialog was so weak that Billy Chrystal and Greg.Hines had turned them all down. Simply because the chemistry and the featherlight developement of their characters worked so well, there wasnt a script to carry that. There were lots of money that was offered for the actors to reprise the roles, but they felt they would have taken far less money in exchange for a good story and better character developement. Which wasnt there. The amount of money that the movie took in was only leveraging factor. From the actors and movie productions point of few, they needed a strong script to be better than the original. That wasnt there either.
So the whole idea of Running Scared II just died.
In the 80s there were lots of successful movies that had this same problem.
Remember there was suppose to be Dirty Dancing II with Jennifer Gray and Patrick Swayze?? That died... instead we got Dirty Dancing - Havanna Nights, 20 years later. Which was suppose have singer Ricky Martin as the lead charcter.. but he turned down the role.
Somethings are just not made to be sequels, sad that true.
too true, im kinda glad it was left alone.
i was only 2 when this film was made and saw it only recntly and then when i read this you know a sequel will never be as good especially when the original was as good as that. missed mr crystal at the oscars this year
Lab Technician at Airport: This is real *beep* This coke is pure *beep*
Ray Hughes: It's good *beep* right?
Lab Technician at Airport: I mean bad *beep*
Ray Hughes: Bad *beep* like, "this *beep* is bad?"
Lab Technician at Airport: It's *beep* *beep* This *beep* isn't worth *beep* There's barely enough coke in here to attract the dogs. Anybody caught on the street with this would get killed..
Bagelj, your imput was great and I thank you for it. But I'd like to know that if there were scripts written for the unproduced sequel, are you or anybody else on this board aware of the potential storylines?
shareIt is indeed unfortunate that Gregory Hines Passed away even If they decided to DO Running Scared II.
*IF* the script was strong enough.... Hypethetically speaking..
Could Gregory Hines's BROTHER Maurice do it?
I hear his Brother Maurice and Greg look similar.. (Just a thought. or potential answer to Greg's Death)
I agree that the chemistry between Billy and Greg was wonderful; probably the best I've seen on screen. While a sequel to this would have been wonderful, I'm glad they didn't settle for just any old script. But I sure would have been glad to see them work together in just about anything else.
*sigh*
It's not just The Man upstairs that you gotta get right with... it's also His Son.
Hollywood is mixed when it comes to sequels, but then again, they're mixed when it comes to any movie. My mother refused to see sequels; she said that they ruined the world set up by the first movie and she couldn't enjoy the original as much after seeing a sequel. "Arthur 2" was nowhere near as good as the original "Arthur", but it had moments that she really would have enjoyed.
Definitely would have loved to see Gregory Hines and Billy Crystal work together again, even if it wasn't in a "Running Scared" movie.
