Daniel Day Lewis is amazing

There was a Daniel Day Lewis season on a while ago due to the release of "There Will be Blood" and it started showing loads of his films. I watched Gangs of New York first and thought he was amazing in it. Then I watched this and was like "Huh?, is that the same person at all?" He's the best actor around I think. I hadn't watched his films since I was young and I loved him then now I think he's even better with now that I'm older. What a guy.

Riggs: Why?
Banker: Because your black!

So no one else seems to think he's amazing then? That's it I'm telling.

if you look the word "actor" in the dictionary, you'll see his name next to it.

I like your sig line. Everytime I drive by this art supplies store called "Blick's Art Supplies" I always think of that guy.

I havent' seen this but heard it's pretty good if you like DDL

Daniel Day Lewis was so immersed into this character that I hardly recognized him. He did an excellent job.

reply

Agreed, he is amazing.

Didn't he nearly retire from acting a few years ago (before Gangs of New York) to work as a cobbler in Italy? Just as well he didn't stay there...

He was brilliant in In the Name of the Father too (years ago).

reply

Yes, he's fantastic - Eleeenor Laveeeesh! Brilliant!

reply

I agree completely, he is amazing, but then he is in absolutely every role he's ever played.

Now this one is particularly remarkable because it would take an extraordinary actor to make one of the most beautiful men of the last century come across so unattractive! And no, I'm not talking about the hair, the monocle, and all that - I mean the way he moves, talks, the expressions on his face... It's so good it's uncanny.

reply

He is.

You guys should also see My Beautiful Laundrette, which he did around the same time. Not nearly as good as this movie, but campy. You could hardly believe that he's the same guy.

reply

I recently watched My Beautiful Laundrette and A Room with a View back to back and if I was not familiar with the actor, I would not have known it was the same person. He is insanely brilliant.

reply

His performance in My Left Foot is his best. Just amazing, I don't know any other way to describe it.

reply

DDL is a tool. I find him incredibly mannered and in Gangs of New York he was ham writ large- he ruined that movie for me.

reply

Agreed. He is a real ham. A bigger ham than Olivier imo. Sometimes this works, as in TWBB, which is a sort of cartoon movie, but in GoNY and ARWaV he totally pulled me out of the drama his work was so forced.

For such an awarded actor he is amazingly lacking in subtlety.

reply

Indeed. My partner and I saw the, My Beautiful Laundrette (1985) and a BBC film called The Insurance Man (1986) within a few weeks back in 1986 and he genuinely didn't recognise DDL as being the same actor in the three parts.

reply

Yea he made "My Beautiful Laundrette" at almost exactly the same time. In fact they were both released on the same day I believe. This shows that he has the ability to snap in and out of character and isnt simply great because of his "method" as many believe. He stole the show in this film even though it has an great cast that all gave fantastic performances. He is just an amazingly gifted actor any which way you look at it.

reply

I think that the first two times I watched this movie I didn't realize it was Day-Lewis!

Nobody's looking for a puppeteer in today's wintry economic climate.

I think Day-Lewis will prove decades from now to be one of the best, if not the best, actor of his generation.

I am so psyched that Spielberg signed him to play Abraham Lincoln. Perfect. Liam Neesom might have physically worked better but DDL will bring nuances to this character that I think will blow us away.
