The rights issue
I heard the movie is considered an "orphan work." Yet, I've also heard that Talia Shire is holding it back for personal reasons. Maybe it's a combination? Does anyone know the truth?
shareTaliafilm II. Ltd, formed in 1978, held the original copyright of the film. In 1990, Taliafilm II. Ltd became defunct after failing to renew their business license, and in turn, made "Rad" an orphan work.
What's cool is that this makes "Rad" public domain and up for independent reproduction (which a guy has done), without threat of litigation, unless Taliafilm II. Ltd were to come back. If they did, I'm sure they'd want their money.

Being orphaned is a little different than public domain.
As I understand it, there's a possibility of a rights holder making a claim. That's not the case with NOTLD, which is why there are so many editions of that movie out there, but no one is messing with Rad.
