Reminded me of Chris Tucker as Ruby Rhod in 'The Fifth Element'. Huge, overacted characters given way too much screentime.
Nothing wrong with having an insanely over-the-top character, but it has to be fed to the audience sparingly, like say, Gary Oldman's Drexl Spivey in 'True Romance'. That said, I still enjoyed 'PiP' and its soundtrack.

I disagree. Duckie had to be far enough "off" in order to explain why Andie had no romantic interest in him.
The actual ending was a last-minute change, though, because test audiences reacted so poorly to Andie and Duckie getting together. What we see of Duckie, save for the conclusion, was written as Andie's ultimate beau.
shareI get why they switched from Duckie to Blaine (Blaine?), but they could have rewritten Duckie at the end to make Duckie the better choice so the audience wouldn't have objected.
What I would have done was to have Duckie change in the last act - have him become more serious in his studies and life with Andie's help - he grows up a bit - gets a scholarship to college - talks about a real future. They meet at the prom after Blaine dumps her and Duckie has even cut his ridiculous hair cut back and not wearing those obnoxious shoes. Have him tell her (with tears in his eyes) that he only ever wanted her to be happy, and if that meant that her happiness would be with someone else, he could accept that.
Andie realizes the change in Duckie and sees him differently than she's seen him up until now.
