I still don't get it. He's rich, handsome, good heart, and can get any girl he wants, but still go for average looking outcast? I can't think of any reason.

I think I understand what you mean. It was the fact that she was different from the other girls as far as mind set and priorities but guys don't usually just notice that from across the room and fall in love. What was it about her that even got his attention in the first place? She's just a poor, plain looking average girl, from the wrong side of the tracks; why would he have even noticed her, especially in a huge school full of rich stuck up kids?
