The 'poll taker'.....

What was that all about? When Peggy sue walks in her mother is talking about a cocktail ring. The guy is obviously looking at her jewelry. He then says he'll take it with him and have an appraisal for the mother next week. Then she tells Peggy Sue that he was poll taker and she's going to vote democrat and doesn't want Peggy's dad to know. What am I missing?

He was not a poll taker. He was someone who appraises and buys jewelry. Peggy Sue's family was in financial straits and her dad kept spending money (on the new car, for example) as though things were still going well for them. Her mom was the one tightening the budget, and she was going to sell some of her jewelry to help make ends meet.

Dad owned a men's hat store, and those were seriously on the way out in the early 1960s.
