What was that all about? When Peggy sue walks in her mother is talking about a cocktail ring. The guy is obviously looking at her jewelry. He then says he'll take it with him and have an appraisal for the mother next week. Then she tells Peggy Sue that he was poll taker and she's going to vote democrat and doesn't want Peggy's dad to know. What am I missing?

Her mom was the one tightening the budget, and she was going to sell some of her jewelry to help make ends meet.
