The grandfather is shown to be a decrepit old man in a wheelchair who apparently doesn't or can't talk, but by the end of the movie he's walking and talking. Was there something I missed? He literally had a nurse following him around early on but made a miraculous recovery by the end of the movie. Did I miss something?

Um, he just didn't want to talk with his own family and at the end said some nice words for Demi Moore...you didn't miss anything.

Teddy's dad talks about what the old man will do if they lose the boat race, so we know the old man isn't mute. He smokes cigars, wears glasses, and looks around.
