Directors Cut

I've often heard that there was a much grittier, original version that included an attempted suicide. About 30 minutes was edited down to a "lingerie ad". I've been unable to locate an original cut out there- is it to be had?

i have it and i got it on Amaaon yeaars ago. It doesn't say anything different, but if you look st the running time you will see that one has more time on it than the other. the extra time makes the movie not only better, but things more clearer. i hasven't seen the movie in over ten years, but i don't remember an attempoted suicide scene, but i could be wrong.

The easiest thing i have ever had to do was give my heart.

What they call "full", "uncut" or "uncensored" in the US (what's on DVD and Blu-ray) is only a slightly longer version than what was released theatrically in the US back in 1986 - it's also pretty much the only version available nowadays. Back then, the scene where Elizabeth crawls on the floor to pick up the dollar bills didn't make the cut, along with a few others. In Europe however, the movie was directly released the way we've all seen it now.

I recall a Kim Basinger interview where she states that the original cut was over an hour longer than what was ultimately released (an estimated running time of 3 hours). Audiences did not respond to the longer cut so the studio trimmed it all down prior to the theatrical release - hence the music-video-type sequences that the movie is so often criticized for. You can also see bits and pieces of the deleted footage in various trailers for the movie. I don't remember ever reading about a suicide scene but reading the book should give you a decent idea of what was shot.

I believe the footage is at best locked down in a storage facility somewhere that only the studio has access too. Unfortunately, a lot of times the unused footage of a movie ends up destroyed since storage becomes an issue. I was hopeful the blu-ray would include some new stuff since the movie has become such a classic, but the lack of bonus features and deleted scenes seems to imply the studio doesn't have much to work with anymore.

The longer version would probably have not been criticized for being style over substance.
