Title

What does the title mean, I know it's from a novel but the movie doesn't explain the meaning.

Here's Eco's explanation:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Name_of_the_Rose_(film)#Changes_from_the_book
However, keep in mind that the movie changes certain things from the book and therefore the movie's point might not necessarily be the same as Eco's (which seriously angered him).

My theory for the (movie's) title meaning is this:
Rose is a symbol of beauty in life (not just physical) and every person has a different name for his or her own thing of beauty. To Connery the name of the rose was books (he even put the books before himself at one point) and Adso now in his old age is trying to understand if the name of his rose was God to whom he gave his life to and never regretted it or that girl since she is the only thing he keeps coming back to whenever he thinks of his past experiences.

To (in)appropriately quote Conan: What is best in life? :)

You could even wander on if the name of one's rose is in fact the name of one's representation of God with (some kind of spiritual) love as a suggested word. Or even if there is a path to God if you completely shut down the love towards another and replace it only with compassion.

But now I'm really stretching it.
