Ubertino da Casale in the movie

In the movie Ubertino is sneaked out of the abbey before the Papal legation arrives. In the book, Ubertino is present during the debate.

The movie version in this case seems the more accurate, since Ubertino had been excommunicated in 1325 (two years before the time of Il Nome della Rosa) and had escaped the Papal court in Avignon under threat of being judged as an heretic.

He died poisoned in 1330, by order of the Pope. Thus it wouldn't make sense having him around in a supposed conclave trying to find some middle ground between the Olivists (or "spirituals") and the Avignon curia.

However, it must be noted at the time both Michele da Cesena and William of Occam were also excommunicated, yet both were allowed in the supposed debate. The difference is that Ubertino had been excommunicated by John XXII in person, while in Avignon.

So, am I correct in thinking that having Ubertino leave the abbey before Cardinal Bertrand and Bernardo Guidone arrive is a more historically likely scenario?

Director was really into history of the church. That's why he appealed to Eco to let him make the movie. It's quite possible that he added his own historical touches like that.

Eco is a professor in medieval history i believe, and he really did his homework for this novel. I can't imagine he didn't look into the matter. If the director WAS closer to the truth than i think it's more by accident than because of research. I'd sooner believe eco
