José Ferrer uncredited?

I was shocked upon watching this movie so many years after I first saw it, to discover just how many great supporting actors were in it. The tone of their voice gave them away more than their looks, it being so long ago. For instance the head of the monastery as soon as he spoke I thought "Old informant father in Munich" and "Guy who paints figurines in Ronin"

But I was most surprised to see that Jose Ferrer did not receive credit for his small role as one of the visiting Franciscan congregation. He even manages to say the word "Emperor" and I swear it was the same tone and style as when he says it in the movie Dune.

What gives?

Look at 59:10 when the monks are discussing the devil. Ferrer turns to Connory and says "Listen William, this debate...." THAT is Jose Ferrer.

The cast is amazing! They were handpicked and you can tell.

It's just a cameo.

reply

There's a resemblance, but I don't believe it is Ferrer.

reply

Absolutely its him. Listen to his voice, it's quite distinctive.

I rather suspect that the actor referred to, who does bear a certain resemblance to the late Jose Ferrer, is Vernon Dobtcheff, an excellent supporting actor with a prodigious amount of film and television credits and still going strong.

denham is correct. The actor who speaks the line quoted in the original post is Vernon Dobtcheff playing the role of Hugh of Newcastle. I suppose he has a slight resemblance to Ferrer but it is definitely Dobtcheff

There's a picture of him on this page: http://www.aveleyman.com/FilmCredit.aspx?FilmID=13416.
