Is it just me? *SPOILERS*

Is it just me, or is Ron Perlman's character one of the most annoying characters ever in a movie?

This was a masterpiece of a movie, but man could I not stand him. From start to finish he was annoying as hell. I usually love him in movies but in this one he drove me nuts.

Without getting too much up my own ar*e here, I would argue that Perlman's performance was one of the few things in the film that was accurate to the book. Salvatore serves so many purposes in the book... Phyically he is the 'degeneration' of the Minorites and flags up how the Abbey had become a (semi-allowed?) refuge for 'heritics' that the inquisitors saw as 'brute animals'. In his speech, Salvatore is possibly metaphor for a library that speaks all languages, but ultimately none clearly. Finally, he is the key character in unrolling the plot - his mad polyglotism gives Adso the insight into opening the Finis Africae: an essentially meaningless puzzle solved by Salvatore's meaning(less) language.

Filmakers love Ron in these movies. In quest for fire, it took everyone, 6 hours to be made up as cavemen. Ron took 20 minutes. In this move it tooks 30 minutes to make him up.

Don't get me wrong, his performance was brilliant, and IMO Perlman is always brilliant. It was the character that was annoying. Admittedly, I have never read the book, so I will have to do so.

Yeah, that's so true. I used to loathe him before I realized that it was his characters that I actually disliked. It's a pity that he's been so typecast but it's a true testament to his talent.

Watch out for the draco who cometh in futurum to gnaw your anima! La morte è supremos. You contemplatum the apocalypsum. Là-bas, nous avons il diabolo, ugly comme Salvatore.

Penitenziagite!
