I have read this twice now, and do not understand.
What is the connection between Keanu Reeves and River Phoenix?
Go read River's IMDB biography. Then you'll understand. The first part is:
His father John had been a carpenter, his mother Arlyn a secretary in the Bronx. They met in California in 1968 where they worked as itinerant fruit pickers. By the time River was two they were members of the Children of God, living in South America, where John was the sect's "Archbishop of Venezuela". In 1977 they moved to Los Angeles and changed their name to Phoenix.
If Keanu actually said that, he was joking about the similarities of River's family's odd travels during his youth to that of the Foxes.

Speaking of which, an interviewer in the early-90s asked River Phoenix how close this film was to his actual upbringing. River looked at Keanu Reeves, and Reeves answered directly, "too close".
