Heart of Darkness
What is it about the white man leaving "civilisation" behind and going up a jungle river in search of enlightenment (or to supposedly 'give' it) when there's a boat involved? They always inevitably go a little nutty! Fitzgerald in Fitzcarraldo, Allie Fox in Mosquito Coast and of course Marlow and Kurtz in Conrad's Heart of Darkness . And then in saying that, why is it that the efforts on the part of film-makers telling these stories leads them to often mirror the insane actions that their characters go through, again I point you in the direction of documentaries Burden of Dreams (for Fitzcarraldo) and Hearts of Darkness (for Apocalypse Now.) Does anyone know if Peter Weir's film of Mosquito Coast was similarly cursed or plagued by such a problematic production?
I think I'm going to stick to Adventureland's Jungle Cruise at Disneyland for all my upriver safari needs!
