Did this movie remind anyone else...
of "Apocalypse Now"? Maybe a little?

Only in the sense that there is a jungle, a river, and some crazy folks...

Honestly, at first, and I'm not trolling, he kind of reminded me of Clark Griswold.

Ha! Clark Griswold...sort of the dark side of Vacation.
shareI've really liked this film since I saw it on TV in the early 90s and subsequently I bought it on DVD, anyway, last night i watched Werner Herzog's Fitzcarraldo.
It really reminded me of Mosquito Coast in a way. The thing with Ice, Mad Man heads into the South Amercian jungle with a dream and it all goes wrong. I hear that Mosquito Coast is based on a book and Fitzcarraldo is based on a true story, I wonder if Fitzcarraldo was an inspiration for the book?
Paul Theroux dedicated his book to "the real Charlie Fox", and implied that he had heard the story from someone who had really gone through those experiences.
Another similar film by Herzog is Aguirre, the Wrath of God, which is about a group of explorers sailing down the Amazon in search of riches, and Aguirre also goes mad. I'd say Allie Fox is somewhere in between Fitzcarraldo (who was quite likable, I thought) and the completely insane Aguirre.
