So Jadrien Steele made you believe he was a kid who turned against his own father and wanted him dead. We were supposed to be disturbed by him, just as by his father. And Charlie (River Phoenix) was supposed to be a more sympathetic character in contrast.
Kids in movies are often portrayed as obnoxious, disturbing, savage etc. I think that's why there are so many "the kid was annoying" posts on IMDb.
