Apocalypse Now?

I haven't seen this movie in a long time, but I justed recently saw Apocalypse Now for the second time and it almost seems that Ford's character becomes similar to Kurtz. I could be totally wrong as it has been like 7 years since I have seen this. Just something I wanted to throw out there.

I suppose that both films do share similar themes: the escape from modern day society, the temptation to play god and the issue of excessive thirst for power which leads to insanity, the journey up a river as a spiritual journey. I consider Mosquito Coast to be a very underrated film and despite certain issues in common with Apocalpse Now I would say it is a very original film.

I agree that Mosquito Coast is very original. I wasn't questioning that.

Hi, I'm from different MB on this site but I was looking up Mosquito Coast to see if it is any good and thought I would mention that Apocalypse Now is actually based off the novella Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. I actually don't think many people know that, but I heartedly recommend the book. Would anybody recommend The Mosquito Coast to me?

reply

Hi! I would highly recomend the movie to You, but I believe it has more in common with movies/books like "Lord of the Flies" or the more recent "The Beach"

Both books deal with the frailty of civilization, and how the deal with the fear of destruction of society. In both Mosquito Coast and Lord of Flies war/destruction of the ordered society plays an important role. Allie (Ford's character) used to love America, but despise what it has become. He has sheeded the God, who has allowed such a deroute, and instead he creates his own God, the big ice machine called Fat Boy (notice the similarity in the name to the nuclear bombs dropped over Hiroshima and Nagassaki).

Allie quotes the Bible all the time, but in a way he makes himself guilty in break one of the Ten Commandments, since he does indeed have another god, than the "one and only"

So, in its own ways it is a story that deals with civilization and religion - or loss of religion, and that's just a few of the similarities with L.O.T.F.

Anyways, hope You'll enjoy the movie.

I just watched this film today. Pretty good. I can definitely see the similarities to The Beach, but I think it is a vastly better film.

no one has mentioned fitzcarraldo. obsessive entrepreneur/inventor, jungle, river, ice, disaster, insanity...

I was just about to mention fitzcarraldo.
Funny, actually, it sort of begans as a Fitzcarraldo tale and ventures into more of an Aguirre setting once the village is destroyed and they take refuge on the river (minus the short stop over at the beach)
The Mosquito coast is a pretty good movie, I enjoyed it and its parrallels to a Herzog-ian plot. However, Fitzcarraldo or Aguirre it is not. Still admirable though.

that's true, it does become more aguirre than fitzcarraldo at a certain point...

the mosquito coast may not be quite on the level of those films but it's not that far off, i think it's a very underrated film. peter weir is a great director, the material is great here, and this is probably ford's best acting performance.

All good films mentioned. You can't top Apocolypse Now for spectacle and vision and talent though and Lord Of The Flies (the novel, not the so-so film) and may Boab The Fly also suggest The Emerald Forest with Powers Boothe and Charlie Boorman made by the excellent director John Boorman.
Mosquito Coast is a great film, recently see it again and River was great- playing maybe a young Louis Theroux in a way as if the hero (Harrison) is Paul Theroux in a slight way then it follows that the son is Louis.
Boab's jis sayin' likes.
