Just rented this film, found it interesting that I was about Fitzcarraldo also. Especially during the trek to deliver the block of ice to the natives.

Thinking the same thing, maybe it's even closer to Aguirre. Both Fitzcarraldo and Aguirre are sublime and deal with madness in the darkest sense, without the futile talk of Good vs. Evil. This was Hollywood drivel. There's no comparison to Werner Herzog and Klaus Kinski.

I don't think it was drivel. For a Hollywood movie they did the best they could. The big difference lies in that Herzog is an icoloclast, while the combination of Peter Weir and Paul Schrader is only very good, not great.

Which is why I stopped watching Hollywank movies years ago.
