Harrison Ford's Best Performance?

Does anyone think it's a coincidence that Ford's arguably two best performances were both directed by Peter Weir? Weir is maybe the most underrated filmmaker of the 80's and 90's.

I just saw the movie again and was again amazed by Harrison Ford's performance. It is probably one of his best performances. The way he slowly brings Allie Fox from eccentricity to egocentrism and then insanity is amazing.

Yes, this is an overlooked classic. As others have said, it's too bad Harrison didn't take on more parts like this, but at least we have this one. He did it all completely without all the "method actor going insane" cliches. It's a one of a kind, which may be why a lot of people don't get it, there's nothing to compare it to. As Harrison learned early in his career, in his time with Columbia and Dead Heat on a Merry Go Round, most often people want something that looks like something that's already been successful. This is like no other movie, especially in the eighties.

I agree, he didn't do the usual going crazy over the top cliches, which makes his performance all the better. Because even when he drifts into insanity he almost makes sense to the audience and the family. Ford is a much better actor than he is given credit for.

I have to disagree. I thought Ford was miscast in the role. This is a role that calls for Nicholson or De Niro.

"Nicholson or De Niro"

LOLOLOL Uhuh sure lets replace them in Die Hard and Forrest Gump as well.

Willis and Hanks were well-cast for their roles. I just don't think Ford was right for this role.

reply

Well miscast is of course is a matter of opinion but it almost came off as if you were saying he wasn't "good enough" to do which would be utter nonsence.

I didn't say he wasn't good enough, I just didn't think he was right for the role.

Its one of his most complex performances.

Easily his best performance he is so believable in his character he makes you really hate him sometimes, I love this movie is one of my fave movies ever! RIP River

Its one of his least appreciated roles, but definitely one of his two or three best performances of his career. And I reject the notion that he was miscast. Without Ford's presence, this film would likely be nothing.

I thought Harrison Ford was uncanny. He literally disappeared into his role. That being said, I have a different take on his character than the majority of posters. He doesn't "go insane" in this film. His character was always crazy. From the moment we first meet him, its tempting to laugh him off as a madman, but when someone like that has power over other people, the end result is too grave to be funny.

I'd call it Harrison Ford's best attempt at acting. This is one of the only roles where Ford doesn't drone in monotone and come across as completely wooden, even though he still misses the mark in a lot of scenes.
