Okay folks, it's time for a little bit of analysis.... Where are they? On a boat. A big boat? Not hardly. A little boat where passenger berthings are by no means accomodating, and much less private. The minister's daughter obviously doesn't just think about the only male on the boat about her own age just when she's in the bathroom, but Emily wants Charlie to know that she also thinks about him while she is in the only place where she, or anybody, stands a chance of attaining any semblance of privacy.

So, of course this rather ginormous hint is about providing herself some self gratification... and is not only a very subtle hint about what, but a very large hint about when and where, which when viewed in the form of an even more subtle invitation, provides all three of the key parts of any invitation: the where, the when, and the what.

The big thing for me about this particular nearly-nonexistent relationship, is that there was so utterly little about it in the flick. Anything else must have been cut for reasons that only the post-production decision makers have any reason to know. That there had to be a lasting relationship between the two is obvious or there would be no reason for the lad to have snuck away from his parents leading up to the final climactic scene. HOWEVER.... exactly how likely is it really for an adolescent young lady to even begin to be in the mood to do something to help a guy who happens to have rejected her so thoroughly as it appears that this young man did to her? Realistically, there would be no way that she would be willing to lift a finger to help him after that.

So, where would the notion have come from that it might be in her own best interest to do something so potentially punishable as what it shows that she does there at the end.... if there hadn't been something else going on between them while they were both still on that boat, something that for whatever reason must have been cut out?

It is therefore my contention that Charlie and Emily had some additional scenes together which were cut out of the final version during editing, with the overly-hopeful belief that the three scenes that they do have together would be enough to portray their entire story line to the audience, but that only appears to have worked with some of us overly analytic types.
