The title

What does it have to do with the story?

Neil Jordan likes the song. In which he writes the film round the title.

The film is about a man's obsession with a mysterious woman he can never obtain, never understand, only love. George's relationship with Simone parallels the world's relationship with the famous painting, the Mona Lisa. We all know what the Mona Lisa looks like, and she has fascinated the world. However, we don't know who she is, what she is thinking, what she is feeling. She looks as if she knows something and everyone has been trying to figure out exactly what that is for centuries. If you ever go to the Louvre, you will find the room with the Mona Lisa is always packed, and the crowds are all gathered around the Mona Lisa while the other paintings nearby are neglected. Yet, for all this interest, Mona Lisa herself is still a mystery.

Also, you have to really listen to the lyrics sung by the late, great Nat King Cole. It's about an elegant prostitute, and the Mona Lisa Painting. A sort of play on words, really.

Mona Lisa, men have named you.
You're so like the lady with the mystic smile.
Is it only cause you're lonely they have blamed you?
For that Mona Lisa strangeness in your smile?
Do you smile to tempt a lover?
Or is this your way to hide a broken heart?
Many dreams have been brought to your doorstep.
They just lie there and die there.
Are you warm, are you real Mona Lisa?
Or just a cold and lonely work of art?
