Hoskins vs. Connery

Supposedly, Sean Connery was Jordan's first choice for the part of George. I'm happy that the role went to Hoskins, who in my mind gave a much more credible performance than Connery could have done. Connery is basically a one-note tough guy in every part that he plays, while George's persona required something more subtle (i.e. a vulnerable, sensitive man behind the cockney street tough facade).

While this was a pretty perfect role for Bob Hoskins, I don't think you're being fair to Connery at all. Check out Sidney Lumet's "The Hill" or John Huston's "The Man Who Would Be King" and you'll see Connery's fully capable of buried vulnerability; there's a reason such top directors were interested in casting him.

Yeah, like other posters point out, you`re selling Connery way short here, but nevertheless he wouldn`t have been quite right here - regardless of talent, he`s still too big, too dashing, too confident and macho (first and foremost, I can`t see him falling unhappily in love with Simone, and being hurt by it... at all). Hoskins is brilliantly cast and gives an outstanding performance.
