80s movie help!

I'm looking for a movie from the 80s or maybe the 90s where a teen or a guy in his twenties builds a futuristic gun or laser type weapon and in the end is killed. Sorry I can't describe it more except that I doubt highly it was a comedy. Thanks!

There's only two movies I know that are close to that. Real Genius, but no one dies in the end. And Laser Blast, but that was from the 70's, and the guy doens't make the gun himself.
