Didn't know there was an alternate ending

So I happened to be watching this on cable and when Seymour stopped Audrey II from eating Audrey and took her to the alley, I knew something was different. I'm conflicted on the new ending. I understand that it's supposed to be like the play ending and while it makes more sense than Audrey surviving Audrey II chewing her up and causing multiple punctures and lacerations, as well Seymour making Audrey II explode from a little electricity, it's still pretty dark. If I had kids, I definitely wouldn't want them seeing it. On the other hand, it does make for a more "adult friendly" version of the film. Maybe I'd have to watch it again to know which one I like better but for now, I'm kinda wishing I had just seen the original ending.

i saw this film as a kid and loved it! everyone is to senistive these days and sorry about my spelling. kids are stronger than you think. i watched horror films as a kid loved every minute of it. did i have nightmares hell yeah i did. but did it stop me from watching them no it didn't. and i to this day love horror films.

the original ending is a LOT darker than the theatrical cut. it's still a dark film but it's a light film as well it kind of has a mixture of both really.

the original (1960) version is a great film all that one is, is a black comedy and a great one at that.

I've got 2 kids that watched the original version when they were 7 and just finished the directors cut now. Sure, it's a bit dark... But why can't kids handle that? They love the music, the characters and the plant.

Especially the music.

2 things happen with kids. You explain everything needed to a point, and the rest goes over their heads until they are older. Any of the "sexual" references are lost on them just like a joke about Kennedy or Carson, there's no frame of reference and that's that.

I've talked to them about Seymour and his actions, as well as the dentist. They know that everything that pretty much everyone did was wrong in one way or another, but for them that is lower in importance than the 3 girls who provide the story anchor and such, they loved them most of all.

Now, would I watch Rocky horror with them? Or Alien? No, not for a few years yet ;)

I like the happy ending better but it's a shame the alt. ending got totally lost b/c there were some really good effects in it.

I think BOTH endings should be available whenever the movie is sold.

Just because we lose today's battle doesn't mean we've lost tommorow's war.

To be fair, the ending in the Director's Cut is in fact the original ending. The tacked on happy ending was shot after the fact at the studio's insistence.

I think the Director's Cut is a near perfect film. I'm not so crazy about the theatrical cut, on the other hand. It's definitely more than mediocre but the neutered ending feels rushed and is less emotionally and visually satisfying.

I like the 'happy' ending because it ends on the little plant outside their garden, smiling.

But that's just me.
