Why did they make Audrey so dang annoying??
I mean, I know she talked kind of funny in the musical, but I literally couldn't watch the movie because of her voice.

I think its a play on Marilyn Monroe's voice. The setting is the '50s and that's when Marilyn was popular and she usually played airheaded roles and her voice was really airy and a bit annoying
shareI don't think Marilyn had a lisp.
shareNot to be nitpicky, but it takes place in the 60's. Specifically 1961. The movie gives two clues to this. First off, the introduction says the movie takes place in September. Later, a radio broadcast mentions President Kennedy, which means it could only be September of 1961, 1962, or 1963. Then when Audrey II is singing 'Feed Me', one of the lyrics is "Would you like a Cadillac car? Or a guest shot on Jack Paar.' Jack Paar was the host of The Tonight Show from 1957 to 1962. His last appearance on the show was on March 29, 1962, which rules out 1962 and 1963 being the settings. Therefore, judging by those two clues, September of 1961 is the only time this movie could take place.
shareThere's a clip of Johnny Carson from the Tonight Show in the director's cut ending, so it seems like the movie takes place in 1963. Also, "Jason and the Argonauts" is shown on a movie marquee in the alternate ending.
shareI never thought of Audrey's voice being a play on Marilyn Monroe's voice. It makes sense now that I think about it. Coupled with the clothing, blonde hair and the slightly helpless act, I guess it's possible Audrey admired Marilyn and copied her.
Admittedly, I too find Audrey's voice grating.
It's strange how women often criticize other women for having "annoying voices." I thought Audrey's voice was beautiful, unique and a huge asset to the movie.
Maybe she should've been played by Fran Drescher?
Colonel Miles Quaritch is like some sort of...non...giving-up...army guy!
Decades ago, Whenever we watched this movie on VHS, my kid sister would run up and hit the TV screen if Audrey was on camera. She was 7 years old, and she hated her voice.
Still, it's a musical, purposely over the top, so Ellen Green masterfully plays the part of Audrey; that being the role of a Super-Bimbo.
Hahaha that's funny ^^^ but seriously her voice was annoying to me too but it went away eventually after the more I watched it. She does have a beautiful singing voice though.

i never really thought to much about it to be honest. i agree with the M.M. aspect that's how she spoke weather she had a lisp or not isn't what the poster meant. take that out and you got M.M. i think Ellen Greene did a great job in the part. and i love her in "Talk Radio' which is also another great film.
i agree this was prolly in (1961) cause Carson took over like it's been said in (1962) anyways. one funny memory and you peeps may get a kick out of this as well was we all know what year it came out in so i'm guessing this was prolly in (1987)
since films used to take about a year to hit video. anyways we rented it. my brother was 13 that year and i was oh turning 9 that year. and we watched it at night with the folks and back than i would be sent to bed about 8:30 or so. i think sometimes 9:00 that doesn't bother me today. anyways we were watching it
and the part where it shows the bed after the Meek shall inherit the earth song played. i mentioned something about the bed.i forget what it was and my brother goes to me shut up do ya want to be sent to bed? meaning since it was prolly after 9:00 at that point and even though it was past my bed time i dunno what his was. my parents wouldn't let us stay up. i said oh ok. and was allowed to watch the rest of it. and when it was done i went to bed. but it's just one of those small things that still make me laugh. i do like your story about your sister though. this is one of those rare films where i love the original to death but i also love the musical version as well.
not everyone likes this version and i'm ok with that. but it has given me great child hood memories. and even without the wonder work the original ending had it still had great work in it when it came to Audrey 2.
And what a set of pipes she has. She belts 'Suddenly Seymour' into orbit...
My ignore list is much too long for a sig line. Do not assume you are not on it.
I liked her voice, made the character stand out, more interesting. Of course her voice wasn't what I was concentrating on most of the times (.)(.)
shareI like Kerry Butler better in the role.
No Day But Today. Today 4 U. One Song Glory.
How we gonna pay last year's RENT?!
Audrey is supposed to be a subversion of the dumb blonde bimbo. She comes across as one, but unlike other bimbos she has some depth and a tragic backstory.
In other words, the movie makes us care about a character who should be written off as a one-note joke.
I mean, I know she talked kind of funny in the musical, but I literally couldn't watch the movie because of her voice. An odd statement considering that it is the same person on both stage and screen.
