The film takes place in 1963. Director's Cut settles it.

In the alternate ending, we see Johnny Carson in a clip of the Tonight Show. We also see "Jason and the Argonauts" on a theater marquee; this movie was released in 1963.

Ah, yet Kennedy was president, and he was killed in November. This could be possible that the eclipse was soon before his death, if it weren't for the fact that Jason and the Argonauts was released in June. The Audropocolypse wasn't until sometime after September 23rd. So unless the film ran the rest of the year, it would be impossible to figure out a legitimate point in time. Yeah, I'm splitting hairs, but what the hell, its fun . God I love this movie though

The calendar in Mushnik's presents another problem. As best I can tell (anyone with a copy of the bluray and a good tv feel free to correct me), it's open to September 1959 (which incidentally is also the issue of Better Homes and Gardens Audrey flips through during SWTG)... Kennedy didn't assume office until 1961.

Yeah I knew about the magazine, but didn't bother with it because it could just be an old issue she has. As for the calender, I hadn't realized that. That and Kennedy sort of contradict the theory I had that the whole movie takes place in 1959, with the exception of the apocolypse, which could be shown in the future. I guess the safest arguement is 1961-62, and Mushnik just hadn't changed the calender in a couple years or something.

1963 just doesn't sound right. one song has the line "watching Lucy on our big enormous 12 inch screen" This makes it sound as if 12" was the ultimate TV size at that time. but in 1963 and 1959 for that matter, TV screens could be had in larger sizes.
