there waas a british film which was a loose remake of King Kong, it waas called "Konga" (1961) starring Michael Gough.

I could be mistaken .... but isn't "Mighty Joe-Young" kinda a retelling/reimagining of the classic "King Kong" story?
I also recall another remake of a giant ape movie made in the FAR-EAST. I think its from the late 60's or 70's. Extremely low-budget. I remmber the story climaxed in the middle of "Hong Kong" instead of the classic New York setting.
And if I'm not mistaken, it also had a caucasian [possibly American] blonde damsel in distress.
There was a movie called A*P*E, that came out in the seventies. I can't remember much about it except it was a King Kong rip-off, and it was terrible.

And don't forget the spoof, QUEEN KONG, in which all the female and male roles of the original are switched. (Fay Wray's character becomes Ray Faye.) APE had originally been intended to be a KING KONG film proper, but legal action forced the producers to drop the name. It was also shot in 3D, but I don't know if it was ever actually released in that format or not. Believe it or not, it has been given a letterboxed DVD release! (If that can be put to DVD, so can the original KING KONG and KING KONG ESCAPES. Even QUEEN KONG has been given the deluxe digital treatment.)
shareA*P*E was a South Korean "remake" which had more to do with Godzilla than King Kong (apart from the overlarge ape!). I recall BijouFlix (you may have heard of it) had copies of it for sale a while back - and just when I was gonna buy it - they remove it from the site. Just my luck!
shareI think you can still find it on Amazon. Forget if it was Image, or another company, that released it. Either way, I was surprised to find it on something other than a bargain label.
