Daniel was a senior in part 1...
Daniel, Ali, Johnny, and the Cobra Kai were all in the same grade... the beach party took place on the night before they all started their senior year...
Johnny even says "I'm not a degenerate, I'm an EX-degenerate. 8 AM tomorrow, I'm a senior. That means I got 1 year to make it all work."
The date of the tournament is even listed as December 19th, and the events of part 2 are listed as "6 months later" in the beginning, and Miyagi even says to Daniel "Daniel san, must have been some senior prom. What happened?"
so since the tournament is in December, and part 2 is 6 months later and Daniel already had his senior prom, that means part 2 takes place when Daniel just graduated high school and is already 18... there's even references to Miyagi wanting Daniel to focus on college, etc...
so that all makes it clear that in part 1 he's a senior... part 2 takes place when Daniel is an 18 year old high school graduate, and the trip to Okinawa is the summer AFTER his high school graduation... and part 3 is set in the early fall of what was SUPPOSED to be Daniel's first year of college (even tho he was apparently taking time off)... so altho part 3 was filmed 5 years after part 1 was filmed, it only TAKES PLACE one year later... so the trilogy is kinda set on a floating timeline, which is why they NEVER officially make reference to what year it is...
so badically, in a nutshell, THAT'S the official timeline of the Karate Kid trilogy... hope that clears it up
If youre confused, youre not the only one... and the Karate Kid is not the only framchise to do this... not by a longshot lol... That 70s Show also had a floating timeline in that way, because it ran for 8 seasons, and the first episode was set in the spring of 1976, while the final episode took place on New Year's Eve of 1979... so those entire 8 years were only meant to REALLY only take place over the course of 3 and a half years even tho the characters aged more noticeably like Daniel did in the Karate Kid trilogy... in Sons of Anarchy, the first 3 seasons all took place over the course of only 8 months, while they were obviously filmed 3 years apart. The Rocky franchise (also directed by Karate Kid trilogy director John G. Avildson) also made a MAJOR continuity blunder that was PAINFULLY noticeable... Rocky 4 was released in 1985... Rocky 5 was released 5 years later in 1990... But Rocky took a trip to Russia to fight Ivan Drago in part 4, and part 5 was meant to pick up where part 4 left off, with Rocky returning home to Philadelphia from his trip to Russia... but during part 4, Rocky and Adrians son, Rocky Jr. is preschool aged... but yet when they come back from their vacation right after, he's suddenly 12 years old lol... that was an unforgivable continuity blunder, and its why Rocky 5 is so terrible.... Karate Kid 3, for all its flaws, was like practically Oscar worthy when compared with Rocky 5...
Just dont think too deeply on timelines when it comes to shows and/or long running franchises lol
