Miyagis father formed a technique from the actions of the drum. Now as far as anyone was concerned the use of the drum was purely symbolic, what they didn't know was the technique hidden within the movement. It's no different to the original meaning of dance which was fighting moves done to music or beat. Since those days gone by, dance has become a form of exercise and entertainment whereas dance as fighting has become.....Kata!
