Japanese drum technique

Never really understood what was so special about the move/technique he learned in this movie and used in the final fight . All he did was throw some really slow right and left hooks and somehow Chozen, an expert martial artist, was left defenseless?

reply

It is an unorthodox move. Chozen was obviously never trained to defend anything outside traditional karate. It must have been the one technique that the elder Miyagi refused to teach Sato.

Experienced fighter my arse, Chozen got beaten up by a skinny lady-boy in a doo-rag. I bet those marines he was 'teaching' were paid by Sato to take the punches and make it theatrical.

It wasn't an unorthodox move. All he did was just stand there and start throwing consecutive, relatively slow right and left hooks. All Chozen did was just freeze and take a beating. Even when I was 8 and saw the movie for the first time it seemed very odd to me.

As he blocks with his left and turns left, he punches with his right. When he blocks with his right and turns right, he punches with his left. Each time using Chozens momentum against himself. So moving like the swing parts of the drum to blck and simultaneously counter.
At least that's the idea. Maybe Ralph Macchio doesn't sell the move very well.

The greatest trick the Devil played was convincing people he didn't exist.....

I used to think the same thing, but if you look closer, Chozen IS actually trying to punch Daniel every time he uses the drum technique. But because he's already worn out, it doesn't come across as such right off the bat.
