We 1st meet him as the line in handyman at Dannys apartments...Danny finds him fast as he's on site n easy to find. Soon as he meets Danny he takes Danny back to this other place he lives...a.pretty nice pad w lots of cars. He only once goes back to th3 apartments and he never ever fixes a single thing there or mentions it even. How does he get back n forth to the apartments he works at and th3 house since he doesnt drive..not only that why does he have all these cars he can't drive?
He must have some cash to afford that house. Cars , and to not work much if ever. Then in part 3 he says "my heart is empty w out you in it Danielson."...the story borders on a gay love affair.

Just guessing, but ... Daniel is the "surrogate" son that Miyagi never had. He also was a "kindred spirit", in that they both were transplanted to another far away area, and had no friends, hardly. So, they sorta became best friends/family (father/son?).

Retired Yakuza associate is my guess. The low maintenance lifestyle, but expensive cars, the martial arts skills, the fact he had to flee Okinawa, stealing a black belt like it was nothing. That must have been one of his very first crimes as a youth. It all adds up.
