This anime is very unpopular in the Americas as most anime fans see it as nothing more than a mindless bloodfest. However, FotNS is also one of the most popular anime franchises *ever* in the entire world with new material having been produced almost ever since it first began.

There is no doubt that the puritanical mindset plays a part in that, this show was probably the most popular anime series in Italy from the late 80s and they use to show the episodes in the late afternoon, uncut, although there have been more restricting broadcasting rules in recent years.
I never saw this series as "unpopular" in America. More like "unfamiliar" in America, since it doesn't get much exposure here. Many fans who've seen it absolutely LOVE it and respect it for basically being the "father of fighting animes".
