How do I know why there were Nazis???

I love this line, ending with "I don't know how this can opener works." I saw this movie loooong ago and that line has remained with me forever. Just saw it again recently and got so much out of it.

That's one of my favourite lines ever, it's so random and hilarious, yet it also has a bizarre kind of logic to it, it's almost saying "don't try to understand these things, you'll only end up confused." It reminds me a lot of another Woody line that I love, from Deconstructing Harry in which Harry espouses his anti-religious view:

"If it's a choice between air conditioning and the Pope then I'll take air-conditioning".

"Reality is the new fiction they say, true is truer these days, truth is man-made"

OMG that is so funny. I'm putting that on my Netflix queue this very minute. Even though I am absolutely unlike Woody in every possible way imaginable, there are times when his humor saves my life, and I mean that. He is my "Duck soup."

I'll take the air conditioning!!!

Saw the movie and loved it, loved the line as well.

It's definately "how do I know why there were Nazis". The conversation is about why Woody's Dad believes in God, and Woody says to him "If there's a god then how come there were Nazis" or something similar.

It's one of the best lines ever!

Even in his mediocre films (Hannah was one of his great ones), Allen always has excellent dialogue with hysterical lines. There must be hundreds of memorable ones in his films.

I used to live in Prague and in the early 90's I saw several Woody Allen films there (in English with Czech sub-titles). It was bizarre to be the only person in the theatre to laugh at certain lines, but not all of Woody's lines are accessible to foreigners.
