1987 Academy Awards

after being snubbed three times in the past, was Michael Caine really deserving of Best Supporting Actor?
or were they just giving it to him as a consolation prize?

also, if Dennis Hopper had been nominated for Blue Velvet instead of Hoosiers, would he have won instead?

2010 Academy Awards:
Best Picture: THE DAMNED UNITED
Best Animated Feature: CORALINE

reply

Well, wouldn't the Oscar voters have taken both of Hopper's performances into consideration? I don't believe that theory - and no, they probably wouldn't have voted for him at least for such a controversial film if he had been nominated for it anyway.

reply

I´ve heard a theory that Hopper was in fact nominated for that other film because the Academy didn´t want to nominate him from such a f-cked up movie yet fealt compelled to acknowledge him in ´some´ way... hence the situation. And yes, Frank Booth is a FAR more memorable character than Caine´s Elliott. Not much of a contest.

Tom Berenger. Platoon. "I am reality!"

reply

Yes Berenger played an uninteresting one-dimensional character in a bad film relatively okay. Won´t wash.

Michael Caine deserved to win the Oscar for Best Actor for 'Alfie' as well. His performance in that movie is splendid, but he was kinda unknown back then.

And yet the Academy nominated BLUE VELVET for Best Director so they must not have found it too "f-cked up."

reply

Mia Farrow was the one snubbed.

reply

She has been snubbed her entire career, sure she was terrible in The Great Gatsby but she was wonderful and deserved nominations in Rosemary's Baby, Broadway Danny Rose, The Purple Rose of Cairo and Alice.

reply

I disagree. I've seen all of those films & Mia Farrow's performances are flat, dull, & cold. She's boring & has next to no chemistry with opposite roles. She deserves not to be a leading actor but a supporting actor at best.

I think Caine got it for his body of work as well as his performance in the film.

Its that man again!!

reply

I loved Micheal Cain's performance in Hannah and Her Sisters. I was thrilled when he won.

reply

I thought Michael Caine was terrific in "Get Carter".

Caine is terrific in this film. His delivery of 'You don't know how hard it is to live with somebody who gives and gives and never wants anything in return!' is heartbreaking and wonderful.

I haven't seen Hoosiers or A Room With A View so I can't comment on Hopper or Elliott, but he was definitely better than either Platoon guy. And if Hopper had been nominated for Blue Velvet it would have been still a hard decision for me, honestly.

reply

I thought Caine was pretty terrific in this movie. I feel that Hannah and Her Sisters, overall, has aged much better than Platoon has over the years. Looking back on that year and the Oscars, I would have probably given my vote for Best Picture to this film instead of Platoon. If the Academy really wanted to award Oliver Stone an Oscar for one of his Vietnam films as Best Picture, they should have given it to Born on the Fourth of July, which I think is his best film to date.

reply

I still say Ray Liotta should have been nominated and won for Something Wild! I feel that they nominated Hopper for Blue Velvet he would be the only one I could pick over Liotta. Caine was very good but this was a makeup for Alfie!
