So Basil has decided not to have anything to do with women?

I know this is a kid's movie but since Basil is based on Sherlock Holmes and the movie with some adult themes showed Basil ignoring the stripper mouse. Is it to be assumed that Basil is dedicated to his work and has decided not to get married or have anything to do with women so no female spy could get close to him for example?

reply

While Basil remains a gentleman (or gentlemouse?) to women, he would never marry one. He has full commitment to his detective work and therefore has no interest in romance.

And I really wish TGMD would stop being referred to as a kid's movie. It's a family movie, or there's parts in it for everyone. That's how Walt wanted to make his films plus his own theme park. He wanted to create things that all ages could enjoy and that was the same formula they tried to do with this film. There are parts that kids would love and laugh at and there are parts only the adults would understand. Having said all that, TGMD is not a kid's movie. At least not by my standards. ;)

Thanks for the reply. Your description of Basil does sum up the point that he is dedicated to his work. You are right that this is a movie that can be enjoyed at any age. I still enjoy it myself. This animated film was a film I saw during my childhood. I guess if you got down to the facts animated films during my childhood were never made for small children. I could never see a four year old watching this. This movie, Secret of Nimh etc were geared toward people with more consciousness. Such as six to 8 years at youngest.

It's always how I've seen Basil as being more interested in solving crimes and enjoying his bachelorhood. For the fans who choose to place him with a significant other, it just means they're attempting that 'what if' scenario of accepting love and marriage.

I agree some scenes may be too intense for young viewers. However, it really depends on the child and how they handle it. I was seven when I first saw TGMD and I loved it. Another seven year-old could be terrified of the scenes like with Fidget popping out or Ratigan's transformation at the end. The Secret of NIMH is another fantastic movie again with the scary scenes. I also loved it and those scenes didn't bother me. I was the type of kid who was fearless. I even sat through Poltergeist just fine. :D

My nephews were never scared of this movie. They watched it young, knowing it was their aunt's favourite.

Now, Scooby-Doo, that scared 'em.

I remember that as a child there were a couple of scenes that terrified me, and that's the reason I enjoyed it. Love being scared.

Maybe Basil was gay. That would explain why he didn't want Dawson to leave. JK

Basil and Dawson are based off Sherlock and Dr Watson. Nothing against gay people but after looking at the info such as Watson being a ladies man and Sherlock being antisocial why does anyone come to the conclusion they are gay? Basil seems kind of socialy different. Watching the movie I do not see him being attracted to or having and romantic feelings toward Dawson. I think Dawson for some reason was someone Basil just trusted and socialy was willing to talk to. Dawson also seemed to listen to and let Basil have the spotlight. Basil I doubt has a network of friends and any friend he has is a close friend. Such as his relationship with the dog Toby.

I have no idea, I just posted that as a joke.

Since Basil is based on Sherlock Holmes, and Sherlock Holmes is asexual, he simply doesn't have much interest in women other than if they are part of his case. =)

you can only assume sherlocks sexuality, since it has never been mentioned in the books. and just because a woman shows skin, doesnt mean she is worth to look at. i think it's pathetic to speculate about a fictional character...

nowadays it was common to get married early and try to live a decent life. but sherlock was just obsessed with riddles... if he was asexual why didn't doyle just mention he had no interest in men or women...

reply

I'm pretty sure he did... Sherlock had no interest in anything except solving mysteries and acquiring the knowledge necessary to do so. And playing the violin.

Sherlock Holmes specifically has no interest in romance or lust at all. As originally written by Doyle, this is the closest Holmes ever got to showing an interest in a woman as more than a case study:

"To Sherlock Holmes she is always the woman. I have seldom heard him mention her under any other name. In his eyes she eclipses and predominates the whole of her sex. It was not that he felt any emotion akin to love for Irene Adler. All emotions, and that one particularly, were abhorrent to his cold, precise but admirably balanced mind. He was, I take it, the most perfect reasoning and observing machine that the world has seen, but as a lover he would have placed himself in a false position. He never spoke of the softer passions, save with a gibe and a sneer. They were admirable things for the observer — excellent for drawing the veil from men's motives and actions. But for the trained reasoner to admit such intrusions into his own delicate and finely adjusted temperament was to introduce a distracting factor which might throw a doubt upon all his mental results. Grit in a sensitive instrument, or a crack in one of his own high-power lenses, would not be more disturbing than a strong emotion in a nature such as his. And yet there was but one woman to him, and that woman was the late Irene Adler, of dubious and questionable memory."

Not romantic at all, really.

Basil may be based off Holmes, but he is NOT mini-Sherlock. He has his own personality. I find Basil to be much more neurotic and outwardly emotionally expressive than Holmes (in the books, that is).

And I imagine Basil to be such a nerd that he probably never was interested in any woman, because back then, women weren't to be found in the places (a young) Basil would have been hanging out.

reply

You are so right when you say Basil's personality is not interchangable with Holmes'!! Basil is much more emotional, to cite just one example.

Sherlock Holmes did have another big interest: cocain.

Basil not being interested in the burlesque dancer (aka stripper) I just took as him being a very practical & realistic mouse-- what's the point of fawning over some showgirl who is only there to entertain every dude in the audience? In my mind Basil is surely into women/mice, he is just more calculated/smart when it comes to seducing them. Being interested in a burlesque mouse is pointless/illogical and he knew that
