THE GREAT MOUSE DETECTIVE premiered!
I remember seeing it in theaters that summer. My family was split into seeing two films. My father, brothers and me were to see HAUNTED HONEYMOON, while my mother and sisters went to see this. However, I saw an HH trailer showing Gene Wilder freaking out, so that warded me off so I saw TGMD with the females instead. Ironically, I thought HH would be scary, so I expected a gentler film...I got Fidget's scary close-ups and Ratigan going beast! I remember the film had two Disney shorts, MOUSE CLEANERS and THE COUNTRY MOUSE AND THE CITY MOUSE.
It then came to video in the summer of 1992, and I fell in love with it. However, I was disappointed that I wanted more Basil adventures then the 1hr, 14 min could give me, so I turned to Sherlock Holmes films like the Basil Rathbone-Nigel Bruce series (which I learned was an influence to the Disney film), the Jeremy Brett-David Burke-Edward Hardwicke Granada series, and MURDER BY DECREE and became a Holmes film fan. Thanks, THE GREAT MOUSE DETECTIVE!
