just a thought about the ending!!!

so He goes missing for 8 years from travelling at light speed! so technically he hasnt time travelled per se, hes just gone missing for that amount of time
at the end though! when he actually travlles back in time! has he left his parents in the future without a son?

Time is a funny thing, but the explanation is, he when back in time to his parents, so in the future he would be there. I guess time travel is a funny thing.

By going back to 1978 he has indeed opened up a different time-line. So his family will exist in two different time-lines, one in 1978 with him, and one in 1986 where they have lost him for a second time.

"John 3:16"

and that would be a good sequel.

Strangely enough I agree.

Depends on the 'rules' of time travel this movie follows. If its linear and David travelled back in time, the 'future' he came from would have been replaced. If not and alternative realities were created, it would've sucked for the future family. I always assumed it was linear but time travel is confusing since its all theory.
I remember some tv show referring to it as 'Back to the future rules' and 'Terminator rules'. Could be totally wrong though. Meh, back to my bourbon.

You're thinking of South Park where they ask and go through what Time Travel rules these certain characters are following. Whether its Terminator, Back to the Future, or Timerider rules. But Timerider rules are just plain silly according to the episodes
