So what was MAX?

Some type of sentient alien, or a really advanced type of robot? He/it seems to be a bit of both, but I don't recall if that's ever fully explained.

What if the craft (and Max) is just a piece of machinery from the alien planet? For example, the aliens on the other planet would look like aliens, but Max is more of an android used in scientific explorations (like a robot exploring a volcano or something)?

He's hardly an android. An android is a mechanical device made to resemble a human. I haven't seen many humans with one large eye that rotates about on a single articulated limb.

I think the word you are looking for is artificial intelligence, not robot.

David asks what he/it is and Max answers a "trimaxian drone ship". Since he doesn't say he is an alien lifeform, I assume he/it is a AI (artificial intelligence). He is intelligent enough to learn new things, so I qualify him as a AI.

Max is a drone ship. His creators obviously use him to gather test subjects from distant worlds for scientific research. The "Max" David talks to is likely the ships operating system, a form of AI that may or may not have been sentient before he absorbed part of Davids personality.

Max is the ship's AI. It even says as much; "I'm programmed with superior intelligence".
