Well maybe not like this but rewatching this as an adult triggered another film in my mind where a group of kids meet a green guy in a football jersey I think who lives under one of their beds in a huge underworld place.

Does anyone have any idea what film I mean?

FOTN actually reminded me a lot of Interstellar. Also, you'd probably enjoy Donnie Darko, and Butterfly Effect!
