Disney? Not Disney?

The new UK DVD release has no mention of Walt Disney Studios? No logo on the box no Disney mention in the film's credits or closing titles? What gives?

Actually, I remember seeing this movie for the first time when I was like 6 or 7 and it was the "Disney Sunday Night Movie" on ABC. It was split into two parts -- part one went up until just before he boarded the ship and then part two picked up there to the end. I taped it on VHS from that broadcast and watched it 'til the tape wore out! So awesome.

Anwyays, Disney had a hand in it as far as the late 80's, so it's somehow related.

I just got back from DisneyWorld and at Disney/MGM Studios they have do have the real or a replica of Max on there back lot tour

reply

Bingo steve!

I remember the exact same thing. It was a 2 part movie. The first part went all the way up to the point where the staircase on the ship comes down. You had to wait a whole week to see the rest of the film! It was brutal at age 6!

As a matter of fact, I still have the recording. With all of the old commercials from the late 80s. One of them included the "double mint" twins!

lol

reply

Oh yea...it is disney for sure.

One of my all time favorites next to Cloak and Dagger of course!

DISNEY IMO isn't the same , but then again I'm not the same anymore.lol

reply

I also remember the very same DoubleMint commmercial from that showing on ABC! Oh my freaking God I had forgotten all about that! There was a couple of Burger King commercials too, and also Dolly Parton's show came on right after. It may be a testament to my awesome memory, or just the fact that nothing AT ALL interesting has happened to me since then, but I remember (and I am not even in to country music-not even a little bit) that Merle Haggard and Holly Dunn were on that episode of "Dolly" from her saying it during the closing credits of "Navigator!" Is that pathetic or what?

Cheers

You hit the nail on the head, dude. I had this movie taped from the ABC Disney Sunday Night Movie myself, both parts. I remember this because I was sick that night and couldn't go to church with my family, lol. So my dad stayed home with me and we taped/watched this movie. I then proceeded to wear the tape out for YEARS. I was about 5 or 6 at the time, I think. Awesome movie for a kid/kids, even now, in these days of goofy over-the-top CGI effects.

That is exactly when I saw it too, it seemed like it was an "event" for everyone, I remember all of my friends talking about and friends families, etc. Check this out, it brought back some major memories:

Thank goodness for technology to make it easy to remember this stuff. The kids today are lucky, in 10,15,20, 50 years they will have a time capsule of their lives because of cheap, good, available technology of today.

Well, I saw this movie in the theater, so it was originally a theatrical release.

Disney's 1986 Flight of the Navigator combines a strong ensemble cast and classic '80s soundtrack with dazzling special effects for a high-flying sci-fi adventure. While searching for his little brother in the woods, 12-year-old David Freeman (Joey Cramer) falls down a ravine and is knocked unconscious. After what seems like minutes, he returns home, only to discover that eight years have passed since he was declared missing and presumed dead. Even more mystifying is that David hasn't aged, nor can he account for the time lapse. Meanwhile, NASA officials stumble upon a futuristic spacecraft and are determined to assess what David knows about it by locking him in a top-secret lab for scanning and testing. His only chance of escape is in the spacecraft manned by Max, a wisecracking robot. Cramer gives an earnest performance, which overcomes an imperfect script, while enough one-liners and imaginative animation will keep families engaged. Watch for Sarah Jessica Parker in one of her first film appearances. Rated PG for language. (Ages 6 and older) --Lynn Gibson

Actually for those of you who want to see this movie, just go to YouTube.com and search for "Flight of the Navigator."

The movie starts with the classical Disney Castle introduction and the first thing you see after that is "Walt Disney Pictures Presents," so it is a Disney movie.

If you don't believe me just go to YouTube.com and search for it before Disney executives have it taken down.

I also happen to own this movie so I have no doubt that it is a Disney Movie as it starts in the same way.

Is this for real? Of course this was a Disney flick, they where involved in many aspect of this movie, including the promotion of it in 86, I have the Video and its a Walt Disney presents case like they all where, big and nasty `disney sure new hoe to stand out on the Video Rack. I still remember the Etertainment Tonight preview where they where showing off how this new thing called Computer Generated Images created Max.

One of my favorite movies of ll time, seing as the first time I saw it I was 8, and it blew me away.

reply

My grandpa had a movie poster of this when I was little it was when it was in theaters, and it says Disney presents on it.

I do find it odd that Fox is on top of one of the pictures on this page, because back in the 80's this was a disney movie, as well as on Disney Sunday night movie.

It was a co-production. Disney got distribution rights in North America but not internationally. I believe in the UK it was released by PSO, although I seem to remember the Disney name being used in all the publicity when originally released here.

reply

I was obsessed with this movie when it came out, and I do not remember the Disney logo on the poster that I had on my wall, or on my original copy of the VHS. However, a few years after the release my copy wore out and the new version I bought had Disney on it.

It was Buena Vista before the Disney logo, and seeing that is a Disney company this is a Disney film that they slapped their name on after it became popular.

And to clear it all up, it was released in theaters on July 30th, 1986. My 8th Birthday party went to go see this movie.

reply

Buena Vista was, is, and always has been part of Disney, Walt Disney started the company in order to distribute his films (at least I believe that to be the case).

I'm not entirely sure that you were saying that the above is not the case, but I wanted to make sure, and set the record straight, just in case.

reply

It might actually have occurred to you that the world outside your country (presumably the USA, may be wrong) is actually important. But of course, we don't matter, do we?

reply

This was originally brought out by Disney, but nowadays other companies own the rights to it; Disney sold them years ago.

If you buy it nowadays, here in the States Universal owns the rights, don't know about any other countries though.

reply

In the UK is was released by PSO but Disney might had had USA distribution rights and might had been an independent film picked up by Disney.

Its that man again!!

According to Imdb and other sources a lot of it was made by Producers Sales Organisation but then they went bankrupt and Disney bought it in a liquidation sale and helped to finish the film. That's why it still says "A Producers Sales Organisation Picture" at the beginning as well as Disney

When you start the disc, the first thing you see after you hit Play from the menu is the Walt Disney Pictures "Disneyland Castle" splash screen (with the "When you wish upon a star" tune). Then the very first opening credit (in yellow text) is "Walt Disney Pictures Presents".

So yeah, it's pretty obviously Disney.
