Filming locations
I've loved this movie for years and have been trying to track down where some of the scenes were filmed. I've seen a lot of locations on Google Earth that look very similar but does anyone know them for sure?

shareWatching the credits, parts of it appear ot have been filmed in Norway of all places! Not sure which parts of the film though.
shareIt also said filmed on location in Broward County and Hollywood Florida.Finding them today is tough because I'm sure the area has gone through some drastic changes in over 20 years.

I hereby confirm it was partly shot in Norway, in an empty factory outside Oslo where some or all of the spaceship-scenes were shot. I was one of 6 production assistants, and there was a mixed crew of Americans and Norwegians among whom the main functions such as Producer, Director, DOP, Gaffer, Grips, Productiondesigner etc were Americans.
Why in Norway? Because a part of the budget was Norwegian investment money. It was interesting though to work together and experience that filmpeople are very much alike wherever you come, the Americans more specialised and experienced and used to a more firm hierachy on the set, whereas the Norwegians, less industrialised, are more used to deal with more than just one single profession/function on a filmset. Personally I was lucky to talk to all of the crew because I was the norwegian union-man.
Sincerely
Trygve Hagen, filmeditor and shortfilm-director
Norway was used for the soundstage of the spaceship's interior. This info came right from Randall Kleiser himself. We have a number of mutual friends and he was a classmate and very close friend of my mom's cousin too.
shareTrue, parts of it were filmed in South Florida (most of it, actually)...
A number of the outdoor scenes, especially when David stops to ask directions, and, later at the roadside gas station, were likely filmed along US 27, perhaps at now-extinct Andytown (now the intersection of I-75 and US 27), or, further north on US 27, in the almost-extinct town of Palmdale (north of Clewiston)...
The "railroad track" scenes seen early and late in the film were likely filmed along the current Florida East Coast railroad track in north Dade or Broward Counties...
As others said - South Florida has changed much since this was filmed...
The original house that they live in is on the New River in Ft Lauderdale, The house is still there . The second house next to the bridge is no longer around it is now condos. The scene at the beginning with the dogs catching the frisbees was filmed outside WSVN 7's studios on the 79th Street Causeway in Miami.
Thanks for the info. I was using Live Maps to look for the second house, because all I knew was that it was near a drawbridge. At least now I know I can end my search since it's no longer there.
sharedid you find the original house on live or google maps? South FL has street view now so i can probably find what the original house looks like today, if i do i will post. I know its there i drive by it often.
shareThe previous poster was wrong, the 2nd house IS still standing.
The reason for the confusion is that it is not in Fort Lauderdale, but in Hollywood FL.
You'll find it on N 7th Avenue, directly north of the bridge on Hollywood Boulevard. Sadly Streetview doesn't quite reach the house, but you can see it on Bing Maps Birds Eye View here:
http://www.bing.com/maps/?v=2&cp=nb1wqy89q2y7&scene=38814558&lvl=2&sty=b&eo=0&where1=N%207th%20Ave%2C%20Hollywood%2C%20FL%2033019
I just want to confirm what a previous poster stated regarding the second house. The second house is absolutely still standing (and not torn down for condos as another poster suggested) and is indeed just to the north of the Hollywood Boulevard bridge (which crosses the intracoastal waterway along Hollywood Boulevard and ends at AIA (Ocean Drive). It is a main artery to the beach. In the ariel shots you can see the cars backed up on Hollywood Boulevard. They are heading west over the bridge to get to the beach.
In a side note, on the AIA side of the bridge is the Hollywood Beach Hotel (which in the 80's was the Florida Bible College). This was one of the primary filming locations for "Porkys".
I grew up in Hollywood and as a kid we would fish under the bridge right where the movie is shot. Caught many a snapper, moonfish, ladyfish and snook there.
Hello,
back to the first House, please!
A previous poster suggested NEW RIVER / FORT LAUDERDALE.
Does anyone of you know exactly where it is located?

Hello, I am from Germany!
So, please apologise my bad English betimes...thx.
Whilst alterations have been made since the movie, you can see the first house here on Idlewyld Drive in Fort Lauderdale:

There's a good shot of the house around five and a half minutes into the movie which you can compare it with.
DanialF,
what a beautiful place, there!!!!! And a boat on the river close to the mansion where you have the opportunity to take a look at it every day. And fine weather mostly! I am from Germany, so I cannot believe this!!! :)
I am living in the wrong Country, thats for sure!!
Thank you for the link. I will watch this movie again next Friday ( after many years )!

Thanks for the info on the railroad scene,id been wondering where that was filmed for a long time.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rkpbSD5sOj8 I'm running this monkey farm now frankenstein
I am a real big fan of this movie and I also looked up the filming locations in Fort Lauderdale.
The the Freemans house is actually located in Fort Lauderdale on the beach in an area called Idlewyld Estage...637 Idlewyld Drive. In 2005, when I visited Florida the first time it was there in full bloom...but later in 2009 its now gone and an empty lot.
But the house of David Freeman's little brother's friend is still there in Ft.Lauderdale. The wooden pyramid-shaped house with all the trees around!
Its somewhere in the Riverland Village area at SW 31st Avenue.
And the train tracks, where David crossed to get his brother home from the friends house are also still there. In the north!
And even the military facility where the spaceship was brought is still there and is used for big Yachts...but its now closed tight with security, 2009.
Somewhere on SW 17th Street Street and SW 12th Avenue.

This is not true according to Streetview which shows the house very much standing and looking fine with a yacht at the dock across the street. The date on the streetview image is April 2011.
Hmmm but I ve been there in person and was standing right in front of that empty lot back in 2009. While in 2005 ( my first visit ) there in fact was a house and that long windows overlooking the bay.

You cant really trust Google street view with the accuracy and real-time views.
Well, you can check it out on another source at Bing maps, Birds Eye view. The house is still there. The Bing picture is listed as copyright 2010.
And by the way, the dates on the Google street view maps are reliable. I moved from my old house in Jan 2008. The streetview picture of my old house shows my car in the driveway and pumpkins on the porch. The Streetview date? Sure enough, October 2007.
You were standing in the wrong spot, buddy.
It seems your right now! After checking again, there seems to be a house standing now, or more like a palace.
That photo I took was from 2009!
Still the location is the same as in the film but not the house anymore.
Anyway on the eastside of the Highway 1 in Fort Lauderdale, there you def still can find the wooden pyramid-shaped house ( surrounded by many trees ) of the little brother's friends house.
Plus the piece of train tracks, David Freeman crossed to run from the woods to his house, is still there
And the boating yard, where they filmed the Navigator meeting scene is still there, is still there.
Does anyone know what scenes were filmed in Norway?
In the end credits there is a whole unit dedicated to Norwegian film workers, so it appears it was either on location shooting with maybe second unit work.
Only the scene with the cows looks remotely like Norway to me. The rest looks exactly like Southern United States.
Pizza? Thin or Thick? Chicago.
look up adam the woo on youtube. He takes a visit to the filming locations to see how they look 26 years later. Hope this helps.

The overseas filing locations was part of an ( partly abandoned ) cracker factory. Is in the country of Norwayland. The soundstage was build there as part of the funding came from this country.
