"Boudu sauvé des eaux" is a play not a movie.

It is a French film [a very old one].

As much as I like Paul Mazursky and Nick Nolte, they don't match up to legendary director Jean Renoir and the incomparable Michel Simon. Down and Out in Beverly Hills had it's decent moments, but Boudu Saved From Drowning is a terrific film!

Yes it is based on Boudu, by Renoir, but with a twist. In the original, Michel Simon pretends to drown a second time to escape the bourgeois family, at the very end of the film.
In the Mazursky version, Nick Nolte comes back to live with them in the final scene.
