Remake

Just finished reading Diana Henstalls novel Friend, this could be such a cool movie. I can't believe nobody's mentioned the idea of a remake, afterall the entire horror genre seems to be undergoing a 'remake'. Friend has massive potential, at the moment I'm stumped as to who I would want behind the camera. Any ideas??

yes none remakes are *beep* old movies alone

Can you elaborate? your post doesn't make much sense, no offence.

If they did, I think someone like Chris Colombus should direct, because the story is told from a child's POV. Colombus is good at getting the essence of childhood into movies. He did the first couple of Harry Potters.

Or maybe the woman who directed Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen. That had a nice retro feel about it.

Sorry, did you say something?

I've actually heard that Halloween is getting a remake... Think it was on Bloodydisguisting.com

What shall it profit a man, if he gains the whole world, but loses his own soul?

I thought the original was done terribly. What was Wes thinking when he directed this crap-fest? I saw Deadly Friend when it was first released back in the 80s and expected so much more after he released A Nightmare On Elm Street.

The book was very good. If you haven't read it- pick it up.

I'm not a fan of remakes in general but I believe a remake of Deadly Friend would be an improvement over the original.

Deadly Friend is excellent in places, the first half hour plays out like your typical teen drama, boy meets girl, they fall in love, tragedy befalls them, then out of the blue Craven decides to change all the rules and have Swanson throw basketballs at old ladies!

Charles Bernsteins electronic score is really the highlight of the movie for me, simple arppegiated melodies that add so much to otherwise mundane scenes.

To be fair to Wes most of those ridiculous scenes were the idea of Warner Brothers, they forced screenwriter Bruce Joel Rubin to write in six extra splatter scenes, this was one of them.

I'm told there is a directors cut which leans more towards science fiction.

As I've said the book is excellent and demands a decent, worthy film adaptation. In the right hands it could be a classic teenage frankenstien movie. Here's hoping!

I agree that the music really helped a lot scenes that were mundane. I thought the ending was a poor far-fetch attemp to show Sam/BB wanted Paul to be with her. I am fond of the cast so tht was another thing that worked for me.

Spoilers:
I didn't mind the scene where Paul saw Sam's Dad coming out of his matress because it stays consistant with the scene that Sam put his face into the boiler. I would be having nightmares too if I was hiding dead bodies.

I really loved the book. I have to read it again.

Well, thank you boselecta and diezman for your precisions, i love everything
Wes Craven, specially Freddy,Scream, and Shocker(bombed by Mr.M.,critic emeritus
and remade by recidivist WesCraven). So i was rather perplexed when i saw "DF"
at first in 1990 on rented VHS.What begins as a teen sci-fi-hrrr comedy ended
badly for nice people with no villain to blame.Recently HBO reruns it on cable
and i still keep my first impression; i hope that Mr. Craven will remake DF
in a more comprehensible vein(forgive me,but i am thinking of an ending a la
"Weird Science") and "perhaplessly" retitle it :"Young Krankenstein" with
warm apologies to Mel Brooks.
This name "Kranskenstein" ,i confess i owe it to this incomparable genius
Carl Barks(1901-2000),from one of his GyroGearloose comics.

remakes are hit and miss. It would most likely be water down to a PG-13 rating. I wonder who would play Samantha?

reply

Remakes suck and if they did do it they would get Jamie Lynn Spears to do it.

*beep* and after reading some of your comments you are full to bursting with the brown smelly stuff. Time for your cyber-enema.

To be honest I am tired of remakes. I agree they would get someone like Jamie Lynn Spears to play the part of Sam since studios love to cater to the young set. It would most likely be PG-13. Sure Deadly Friend wasn't the best but it has that great music score and I personally liked the main leads. I have read the book Friend and I agree that the father Harry could have been a little more developed but that is what happens when producers think they can make movies.

reply

First of all, Jaime Lynn can't do the role of Samantha yet, since she is NOW PREGNANT AT THE AGE OF 16!!!!!!!!!

Instead, how about Scout Taylor-Compton as Samantha, Mark Rendall as Paul, Tom Felton as Tom (lol i realized they have the same name!), Neve Campbell as Jeannie and Jenny Agutter as Elvira.

And to get directed by Wes Craven, or Rob Zombie.
Using the same music modernized a bit by Charles Bernstein.

Gumby is da old-skool king!
